About the museum
The house in Jasenová, five kilometres from Dolný Kubín, was built in 1856 by the writer's father, Ján Bencúr. The house with its farm buildings forms a closed complex, in which Martin Kukučín (1860–1928), Slovak prose writer, dramatist and physician, was born and grew up. It was opened to the public after reconstruction in 1960.
In 2010, for the 150th anniversary of the writer's birth, the Oravské múzeum renewed the complex and the exhibition and added a literary section. The front room and the kitchen are furnished with period village furniture; two further rooms present Kukučín's life and work in pictures and words. Agricultural tools and implements are displayed in the farm building.
A statue of Martin Kukučín by the sculptor Ján Kulich stands in the nearby park.
