About the museum
The story of Galéria Nedbalka began with the collecting passion of three philanthropists: the spouses Miloslava and Peter Paškovec, and Artúr Bartošek, who wanted to make a private collection of Slovak art public and to make it accessible in the heart of Bratislava. Artúr Bartošek systematically bought paintings and sculptures until there were so many that they needed a representative space.
They found it in an inconspicuous building in the historic core of the city, which after extensive reconstruction was equipped with precious materials and modern technologies suitable for preserving and exhibiting art. The interior is reminiscent of the concept of the Guggenheim Museum in New York, which is why the gallery is also called the Slovak Guggenheim. It opened to the public for the first time in October 2012. The concept of the permanent exhibition was created by the art historian Zsófia Kiss-Szemán.
The permanent exhibition traces Slovak art from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to the present and is spread over four floors: Prelom storočí (Turn of the Century) on the fourth, Výtvarná moderna Slovenska (Slovak Art Modernism) on the third, Skupina Mikuláša Galandu (The Group of Mikuláš Galanda) on the second, and Osobnosti a fenomény (Personalities and Phenomena) on the first floor. The price of the ticket to the permanent exhibition includes a coffee or tea in the gallery's café and a digital guide.
