About the museum
The manor house in Markušovce was built in the Renaissance style in 1643 for František Máriássy. Its present form is due to the Rococo rebuilding of 1772–1780, initiated by Wolfgang Máriássy. A museum was set up here in the 1950s, and after reconstruction in 1983–1994 the Expozícia historického nábytku (Historic Furniture Exhibition) was opened in the manor house. Its foundation was the furniture collection of the manor house in Hodkovce below Spiš Castle, which belonged to the Csáky family.
The exhibition presents the development of furniture art and interior accessories from the 17th century to the early 20th century, from Classicism and Empire to Biedermeier. Besides furniture, porcelain, mirrors, weapons, works by Spiš painters and a collection of historic clocks are on display. The manor house also has an exhibition on the Máriássy family and the legacy of Pál Máriássy.
The single-storey Rococo garden pavilion Dardanely was built in the last quarter of the 18th century by Wolfgang Máriássy; in a contract of 1775 the building was called Babylon. Since 1983 it has housed the Expozícia klávesových hudobných nástrojov (Exhibition of Keyboard Instruments), focusing on domestic makers and the only one of its kind in Slovakia. The dominant feature is the social hall on the upper floor, with frescoes depicting scenes from Greek mythology, which is also used for concerts. The complex belongs to the Múzeum Spiša in Spišská Nová Ves.
