About the museum
The Gemersko-malohontské múzeum was founded on 3 September 1882. Its foundations were laid by the Art and Archaeology Exhibition of the Gemer County in Rimavská Sobota, after which the Society of the Gemer County Museum was established. The collection initially comprised 568 objects that various personalities and institutions donated or deposited with the museum; the first donor was the Budapest sculpture committee named after Sándor Petőfi. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 the museum received a diploma.
The museum building with its present classicist façade is a national cultural monument. The first permanent exhibition in it was opened on 18 May 1913. The bombing of the town in December 1944 seriously damaged the building. The last renovation of the exhibition took place in 1977–1979, and the museum opened it in its present form on 20 December 1979.
The museum documents the nature and society of the Gemer-Malohont region. Since 1996 it has specialised in the material and spiritual culture of the Roma and, from 2026, also of Hungarians in the wider region. Its collections comprise more than 72,000 objects from history, archaeology, ethnology, art history and the natural sciences. Since March 2026 the second floor has been under reconstruction as part of the #4museums project, and a new permanent exhibition is due to open in summer 2027.
