About the museum
The first initiative to found a museum in the Galanta district came from a local history circle formed by local teachers in 1958. The council of the District National Committee (Rada ONV) established the District Local History Museum in Galanta with effect from 1 April 1969, and since 1 January 1990 it has been called Vlastivedné múzeum. The founder is the Trnava Self-Governing Region.
From 1970 the museum was housed in the neo-Gothic Esterházy château, which was built on older foundations and in 1860 was rebuilt after the model of Romantic English Tudor Gothic. Its reconstruction began in 1986, but has not continued since 1990, so the museum acquired a temporary seat in the town centre, in the former bank building from 1905. This single-storey building with a U-shaped ground plan offers, alongside the museum workplaces, exhibition spaces, and since 2019 a numismatic exhibition in the former bank strong-room.
The museum specialises in documenting the history of milling in the Malý Dunaj basin and the lower course of the Váh. The permanent exhibitions also present urban domestic culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sacred monuments, the traditional folk culture of the Galanta region, the equipment of a pharmacy from 1909, artists of the region and the archaeological site Gáň-Brakoň. The museum also manages outlying exhibitions, for example in the Renaissance château in Galanta, in folk dwelling houses, or in water mills in Jelka and Tomášikovo.
