About the museum

The Mestské múzeum v Senci (Municipal Museum in Senec) was established in 2007–2009 under the direction of the zoologist Peter Fedor. It was solemnly opened on 28 January 2010 in the building of the Turecký dom and, from October 2010, has been among the registered museums of the Ministry of Culture of the SR. It is run by the Mestské kultúrne stredisko Senec (Municipal Cultural Centre Senec).

The Turecký dom is a Renaissance curia from the mid-16th century on the south-eastern side of the square. It had a robust appearance but was never a fortress; it is linked to an underground escape passage uncovered in 1960. Until the mid-18th century the Bratislava county often met in it, and in the 19th century it was the seat of the district judge's office (slúžnovský úrad). The house is listed in the register of monuments of the SR and, apart from the museum, it also houses a tourist information office.

The permanent exhibitions are the Expozícia prírody (Nature Exhibition) and the Expozícia starších dejín (Exhibition of Older History). The first presents the living and non-living nature of Senec and its surroundings, including a mammoth find from 1961; the second presents the history of the town from prehistory to modern times on the basis of archaeological finds and archive documents.
