About the museum
The Múzeum Jána Cikkera (Ján Cikker Museum) is one of the youngest museums in Slovakia. It was established in 2004 by decision of the Nadácia Jána Cikkera (Ján Cikker Foundation), whose members wanted to preserve the composer's estate and spread his work.
It is housed in the family villa from the functionalist period, in which the Slovak composer Ján Cikker lived from 1967 until his death. The house with a small garden was designed in 1947 by the architects Eugen Kramár and Štefan Lukačovič. The Cikker couple bought it partly with money from the international G. von Herder Prize, which the University of Vienna awarded to Ján Cikker.
After the composer's death his wife Katarína Cikkerová founded a foundation bearing his name. According to a later will, the foundation is the sole heir to the estate, and after Mrs Cikkerová's death its board decided to use the villa for cultural and museum purposes. A point of interest is the contrast between the functionalist building and rare historical furniture. Museum activity is only one part of the house's mission, which also serves social and cultural use.
