About the museum

The Archeologické múzeum (Archaeological Museum) is a specialised workplace of the Slovak National Museum with nationwide competence. It focuses on acquiring, professionally recording, restoring, preserving and presenting archaeological finds from the territory of Slovakia, from prehistory to the High Middle Ages. A large part of the collections comes from the museum's own archaeological excavations.

The institution follows its predecessors in Bratislava and Martin. The Slovenské vlastivedné múzeum (Slovak Local History Museum) was founded in 1924; from 1940, after merging with the Zemědělské múzeum (Agricultural Museum), it was called the Slovenské múzeum (Slovak Museum), and in 1961 it joined the Slovenské národné múzeum in Martin to form today's Slovak National Museum. The archaeological department gradually separated within the SNM; as an independent organisational unit the Archaeological Museum has operated since 1989 and has had its own building since 1991.

The museum is housed in the Renaissance Kamperova kúria (Kamper Curia) on Žižkova Street below the castle hill. Visitors can see a lapidarium with stone monuments from the Roman period and the Middle Ages, casts of scenes from the Column of Marcus Aurelius related to Slovak territory, the exhibition on the history of brickmaking LATERARIUS, and the cabinet collection of the Evangelical Lyceum in Bratislava. The entrance to the museum is through Žižkova Street no. 16.
