About the museum
The Múzeum kultúry karpatských Nemcov (Museum of the Culture of the Carpathian Germans) was founded by the Slovak National Museum on 1 January 1997 as a specialised museum. Its predecessor was the department of the history and culture of the Carpathian Germans in the Historical Museum of the SNM, established on 1 August 1994. The museum focuses on collecting and professionally processing documents of the material and spiritual culture of the Carpathian Germans and on presenting their history as objectively as possible.
It is housed in the Sunyalova kúria (Sunyal Curia) on Žižkova Street in Bratislava. The original small single-storey medieval house was extended at the end of the 15th century by a covered passage; in the 17th century a courtyard wing was added, and a cellar was hewn into the castle rock. In the mid-18th century the building received a Baroque makeover and housed the well-known inn K zlatému anjelovi (At the Golden Angel). In the first third of the 19th century it was given an Empire-style makeover and a second floor; later it served as a rental house with a long gallery walkway. The building was restored as a monument at the end of the 20th century.
The permanent exhibition History and Culture of the Carpathian Germans presents the regions in which Germans lived – Bratislava and its surroundings, central Slovakia with the Hauerland, and Spiš – and their contribution to mining, crafts, science and industry; it also gives attention to education. The museum includes a documentation and information centre with a library and branches in Nitrianske Pravno and Handlová.
