About the museum
The Múzeum kultúry Maďarov na Slovensku (Museum of the Culture of Hungarians in Slovakia) is one of the specialised museums of the Slovak National Museum with nationwide competence. It collects, professionally processes and makes accessible the collections that document the history and development of the material and spiritual culture of the Hungarian ethnic group in Slovakia. It originally arose as a department of the Historical Museum of the SNM and later became independent.
It is housed in the Brämerova kúria (Brämer Curia) on Žižkova Street below the castle hill. The Renaissance four-winged building from the second half of the 16th century was created by joining older late-Gothic houses around a courtyard. The castle official Brämer had it rebuilt into a two-storey curia around 1600; in the 17th and 18th centuries it received a Baroque makeover and at the beginning of the 19th century a Classicist one. The house is part of the partly preserved Podhradie district with the Church of the Holy Trinity.
The permanent exhibition Tradície a hodnoty. Maďari na Slovensku (Traditions and Values. Hungarians in Slovakia) opened on 22 May 2003 and consists of three parts: images from the history of the Hungarians up to 1918, chapters on the history of the Hungarians in Slovakia from 1918 to 1948, and a treasury of the folk culture of the Hungarians in Slovakia. The museum also has outlying branches in Dolná Strehová and Sklabiná.
