About the museum

The Police Museum of the Slovak Republic is a museum-type facility of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic. According to its own description, it is the only specialised institution of its kind in Slovakia and focuses on documenting the origin, development and activities of the security and police bodies on Slovak territory.

The permanent exhibition has three parts: the history of the security forces in Slovakia up to 1989, the origins and current work of the Police Force of the Slovak Republic (Policajný zbor SR), and a thematic section on criminology, traffic police, Interpol and international cooperation. The tour ends with a staged crime scene.

Among the most valuable collection items are documents from the time of Austria-Hungary and the First Czechoslovak Republic, original uniforms and equipment of the gendarmerie, police and customs guard from 1918–1939, a collection of weapons, and current uniforms of foreign police forces. The museum is also engaged in prevention aimed at young people, including protection against drug addiction, youth crime, legal awareness and road safety education.
