About the museum
The Židovské komunitné múzeum (Jewish Community Museum) is a project of the Židovská náboženská obec Bratislava (Jewish Religious Community of Bratislava) and part of a long-standing effort to preserve the synagogue on Heydukova Street. In 2008 work began on cataloguing the Barkany Judaica collection; in 2009 the community approached the architect Martin Lepej, who designed a new exhibition space, and in 2011 the space was adapted. The permanent exhibition opened in June 2012, and in 2013 a space for temporary exhibitions was added.
The exhibition is installed in the unused women's gallery of the synagogue. The synagogue was built in 1923–1924 to a design by the architect Arthur Szalatnai and still serves as the only Jewish house of prayer in Bratislava. Visitors can also see the synagogue hall itself, so the building is the main exhibit.
The main hall presents the themes Community, Rabbis, Education and Synagogues, a Holocaust memorial wall, and a display case on the life of the Jewish community after 1945. The Judaica corridor shows the main objects of the second collection of Eugen Barkany, which were originally in the Neolog synagogue demolished in 1969. The staircase presents a timeline of the history of Bratislava's Jews.
