About the museum
The Slovak Design Museum was established by the Slovenské centrum dizajnu (Slovak Design Centre) in Bratislava as part of its activities on 31 December 2013. Efforts to build collections and carry out research reach back further, however, and the museum upholds the tradition of the first attempts to found an arts-and-crafts museum in Bratislava at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. Since 18 August 2014 it has been entered in the Register of Museums and Galleries of the SR.
The museum specialises in collecting, presenting and researching all forms of design – graphic and communication, industrial and product, clothing and textile, and multimedia – as well as selected areas of applied art and architecture. The collections are divided into thematic sets, for example communication design, product design (glass, ceramics and porcelain, furniture, electronics) and fashion and textiles.
It is housed in the Hurbanove kasárne (Hurban Barracks) on Kollárovo námestie (Kollár Square). After its first exhibition, 100 Years of Design, it opened a second exhibition of Slovak design in September 2025 under the title dizajn.sk. It presents a selection of representative and timeless works, mainly from the museum's collections, as stories of Slovak design; thanks to the regular rotation of exhibits, it can also show new acquisitions. The museum also includes the Klub dizajnu (Design Club) and the Čitáreň dizajnu (Design Reading Room).
