About the museum
The beginnings of museum-making in Zlaté Moravce go back to 1892, when the idea of the Tekovská archeologická a historická komisia (Tekov Archaeological and Historical Commission) arose. On its initiative the Tekovské stoličné múzeum (Tekov County Museum) was founded on 12 May 1896, for the millennium of Hungary. The present museum arose as the Okresné vlastivedné múzeum (District Museum of Local History) on 11 October 1947, and its main task was to rescue art-historical and natural-scientific monuments from the districts of Zlaté Moravce and Vráble. It was solemnly opened on 29 August 1955. From 1960 the town ran it as a municipal museum, and from 1 January 1985 it has been run as a branch by the Ponitrianske múzeum in Nitra.
It is housed in the Baroque manor house of the Migazzi family on Námestie Andreja Hlinku (Andrej Hlinka Square). The manor house has served various purposes in the past – for example as an office of the district authority, an agricultural school or a district cultural house – and in 1963 it was listed among the national cultural monuments. The museum's collection fund contains over four thousand objects from geology, palaeontology, archaeology, history, numismatics and ethnography, originating from Zlaté Moravce and its surroundings.
The permanent exhibition The Migazzi Family (Rod Migazzi) presents the history of the noble family that owned the Zlaté Moravce estate, in particular the family of Count Viliam Migazzi. Among the most valuable exhibits is a deed of donation from Maria Theresa of 1779 for Cardinal Krištof Migazzi. The exhibition includes a tea salon with objects of the family, clothing from the second half of the 19th century, and the salon of the Paluškovci family, the original owners of the manor house, with Baroque inlaid furniture.
