About the museum
The Slovak Agricultural Museum was founded in 1922 in Bratislava and has been based in Nitra since 1960. Its collections document the development of Slovak agriculture and contain more than twenty thousand objects. Today the museum is part of the state enterprise agrokomplex NÁRODNÉ VÝSTAVISKO and is housed on its grounds.
The museum's exhibitions cover about 8,900 m². The Agricultural Machinery Pavilion shows the oldest steam ploughs, tractors including Zetor tractors, ploughs and threshers, and the hangar displays the Čmelák aircraft and a crop-dusting helicopter. Other parts of the museum are devoted to archaeology, traditional crafts, the development of the food industry and fire-fighting equipment.
The museum also includes an open-air museum of folk architecture with a village school, mills and an oil press, and the Nitra Field Railway, a narrow-gauge line with steam locomotives that takes visitors on a circuit through the open-air museum. The site covers more than 30 hectares and includes a library.
