About the museum

From the 13th to the 16th century the chateau at Topoľčianky was an anti-Turkish fortress with corner bastions. In the 16th century its owners, Count Ladislav Rákoczi and his wife Alžbeta, rebuilt it in the Renaissance style, and one of the bastions became the castle chapel, where pilgrimages in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel have been held every year since 1686. The southern Classicist wing was completed in 1818–1825 by Count Ján Keglevich, then chief county official (hlavný tekovský župan) of Tekov; it is one of the purest examples of Classicism in Slovakia.

The chateau later belonged to Archduke Joseph August of Habsburg and his wife Augusta, a granddaughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Sisi. After the founding of Czechoslovakia it became the summer residence of the presidents; T. G. Masaryk regularly spent two-month stays here until 1933, and other presidents also visited the chateau. In 1970 it was declared a national cultural monument.

Today the three Renaissance wings serve as a hotel with a restaurant, and the southern Classicist wing houses a museum with historic furniture. The exhibition brings together rare pieces of furniture, porcelain, clocks, paintings and portraits of the noble owners, ceramics, carpets, oriental embroidered hangings, period mirrors and weapons. The museum is open all year round, but tours take place at fixed times with a guide.
