About the museum

The Vihorlatské múzeum (Vihorlat Museum) is housed in the manor house in Humenné, which is a national cultural monument and the dominant feature of the town centre. The manor house was built on the site of a medieval water castle; it underwent major rebuilding in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the 19th century the Andrássy family gave it a pseudo-Baroque appearance and laid out a park around it. At the end of the Second World War it was damaged and in 1946 it burned down; reconstruction began in 1964 and lasted seven years.

The museum's beginnings date back to 1960, when the municipal national committee decided that the restored manor house would also serve museum purposes; it obtained the status of a district local-history museum in 1964. Since 2002 its founder has been the Prešovský samosprávny kraj (Prešov Self-Governing Region). The first permanent exhibition, Kultúra bývania feudálov (Culture of Feudal Living), was opened to the public in 1971; in August 1984 an exhibition of folk architecture and housing opened, and since 1989 the museum has included the Galerijná sieň Oresta Dubaya (Orest Dubay Gallery Hall). A natural history exhibition was added in 1990. The collections hold more than a hundred thousand objects; the most valuable include Celtic coins from Ptičie, a set of 17th-century coins from Topoľa, antique weapons and armour, Baroque icons and original furniture.

The art-historical exhibition in the manor house shows the domestic culture of the nobility from the Renaissance to the 20th century, for example the Ornamental Room, the Oriental or Chinese Room, the Golden Salon and the library with a coffered ceiling. The open-air museum (skanzen) with a wooden church from Nová Sedlica dating from 1764 extends over an area of 4 ha almost in the centre of the town.
