About the museum
The first museum in Sobrance in eastern Slovakia was opened in 1996 by Janči Ferko, known as the “guitar king”, a musician and collector. After his death in 2009 the museum was reconstructed and extended by his son Imrich, who doubled the number of exhibited objects. According to the museum, it is the largest guitar collection in Slovakia and one of the largest in Central Europe.
The exhibition includes a wide range of guitars, keyboard instruments, Hawaiian guitars, double basses, gramophones and record collections, period photo and video equipment, and Resonet-brand models used by well-known musicians. The collection also includes hand-made guitar miniatures from around the world, screenings of documentary films, and period promotional materials and photographs.
The tours are commented and experiential, and visitors can try out many of the instruments themselves. The museum also organises concerts, lectures, workshops and art courses. It is run by the civic association Gitarové múzeum o. z., which also has galleries in Piešťany.
