About the museum

In the village of Tokajík near Stropkov, on 19 November 1944, German units gathered the men by the church, led them north of the village and shot them; 32 men died, and two wounded survived. The next day the Germans burned and plundered the village, destroying 27 houses and 28 farm buildings. The victims were first buried in a common grave and in April 1945 were moved to separate graves in the local cemetery.

A memorial room was set up in the village in 1969, but the village did not have enough funds to operate it. The exhibition Fašistické represálie na východnom Slovensku (Fascist Reprisals in Eastern Slovakia) was reopened on 11 May 2009, after reconstruction under the direction of the Museum of the SNP in Banská Bystrica; the reconstruction cost €16,000.

The museum stands at the beginning of the village, and opposite it are the cemetery and a memorial to the victims. The site of the tragedy lies about 2 km beyond the village and is accessible on foot or by car. Together with the symbolic cemetery, it recalls the cruelty of war against the civilian population.
