About the museum
The water mill stands on the bank of the Klátov arm of the Little Danube (Malý Dunaj) within the cadastre of the village of Dunajský Klátov, and is a typical example of an undershot mill with a large paddle wheel. The present brick mill building dates from a rebuilding in the 1920s; the wheel and the drive mechanism are in a wooden extension. The last owner was Michal Cséfalvay, and the mill was last in operation in the 1940s. After a new bridge was built in the 1950s, the water was diverted from the wheel and the mill fell completely into disrepair.
In the second half of the 1980s the state bought the mill; the building and its surroundings were declared a state-protected area, and reconstruction began. The mill was opened to the public on 21 August 1987. It is part of the Žitnoostrovské múzeum (Žitný ostrov Museum) in Dunajská Streda and is currently managed by the village of Dunajský Klátov. The building houses a permanent exhibition on water milling with original equipment. In 2016 the entire building underwent a comprehensive reconstruction, and a viewing platform was added on the opposite bank of the Klátov arm.
