About the museum
The museum in Piešťany belongs to the association Gitarové múzeum o. z., which builds on the work of the collector Janči Ferko, nicknamed the “guitar king”. Ferko opened the first museum in Sobrance in 1996; after his death in 2009, his son Imrich expanded it. Over more than fifty years, father and son assembled a collection of hundreds of guitars and thousands of historical objects. A new large exhibition in Piešťany opened in 2022.
Besides guitars, the museum presents keyboard instruments, Hawaiian guitars, double basses, gramophones and record collections, historical photo and video equipment, and espionage devices of European secret services. There are also Resonet models, which according to the museum were played by world-famous musicians. Hand-made miniature guitars from around the world are of interest to children; the visit includes screenings of documentary films and historical advertising materials. The galleries now also include instruments of Slovak and Czech musicians, such as a dobro guitar by Peter Nagy and a bass guitar by Marián Greksa.
