About the museum

The museum arose in the 1920s on the initiative of Imrich Winter, owner of the Piešťany spa, and the spa manager Václav Vlk, who founded the Piešťany Museum Society. The first collections were opened to the public on 21 June 1928 in the Spa Hall (Kursalon); the exhibition was rebuilt and extended in 1932–1933.

The main exhibition in the Spa Hall presents the history of Piešťany and its surroundings from prehistory, the history of the Piešťany spa, the mineral waters of Slovakia, as well as natural science, archaeology, ethnography and numismatics. Separate sections are devoted to the stay of Ludwig van Beethoven in Piešťany and to General Milan Rastislav Štefánik.

The museum also includes Vila Dr. Lisku, with a permanent exhibition on the history of spas and balneology in Slovakia and a collection of sacred sculptures by Kornel Duffek. The Ivan Kraska Memorial Room is set up in the former flat of the poet on the Váh embankment; a new exhibition on his life and work has been open since 2024. The founder of the museum is the Trnava Self-Governing Region.
