About the museum
The first efforts to establish a museum in Topoľčany date from after the Second World War, when the Dočasná okresná správna komisia (Temporary District Administrative Commission) set up the Stredonitrianske múzeum in April 1948. In practice it existed only on paper, as it had no premises of its own. The museum was actually founded in 1961: on 1 March 1961 it was officially established as the Okresné vlastivedné múzeum v Topoľčanoch (District Local History Museum in Topoľčany) and was given its first rooms in the town hall. The impulse came from the discovery of part of the jaws and tusks of a mastodon from Kuzmice, found by members of a local history circle in 1960.
The first permanent exhibition opened in 1964, and in 1971 a broader local history exhibition was added. The museum is now housed in the historic building of the former imperial and royal district court from the end of the 19th century, which the Pamiatkový úrad (Monuments Office) declared a national cultural monument in 2014.
The Tribečské múzeum is a regional local history museum with a narrower specialisation in documenting the history of hop growing, malting and brewing in Slovakia. It holds more than 90,200 collection objects from the natural and social sciences and prepares exhibitions, lectures and creative workshops for the public.
