About the museum
The Čevljarski muzej (Shoemakers’ Museum) was established in 1979 in honour of the shoemakers who worked in this area and had a significant influence on the development of the town. The shoemakers’ guild and the footwear manufacturer Planika influenced the founding of the museum.
The museum is set up in an authentic Prekmurje house roofed with straw. In such houses the shoemakers once had their workshops, while the family also lived, ate and slept in the same room, so the layout of the rooms in the museum resembles the former one. Numerous tools and aids, footwear and shoe-sewing machines, which were only first used in shoemaking in the 19th century, are on display. The museum was later renovated so that the heritage is preserved for future generations.
