About the museum
The Kovačeva domačija (Kovač Farmstead) in Nedelica is a cimprača, a log house plastered with clay and roofed with straw, built in 1877 on the foundations of an older house. As the farmstead was falling into ruin without a suitable caretaker, the family of Štefan Kovač Jr. bought it from the other co-owners in 1995 and restored it by 2000 with the help of relatives and the Maribor Institute for the Protection of Natural and Cultural Heritage (Zavod za varstvo naravne in kulturne dediščine Maribor). The restoration was designed so that time stands still at the last major changes in 1938, when the old black kitchen was rebuilt and the following year a new outbuilding was added.
A memorial plaque on the house and a museum section in a small hut (iža) commemorate Štefan Kovač, a National Hero from the village. An album preserves material that was exhibited in 1973, when the house and its surroundings were declared an ethnographic and historical monument. The surroundings of the former village mill, after which the farm was known as “pri Mlinarovih” (at the Millers’), are being developed by collecting old farm tools. The farmstead opens its doors for visits and occasional ethnographic events, such as shepherds’ evenings by the fire, corn husking (ličkanje koruze), performances by folklore groups and demonstrations of traditional crafts.
