About the museum

Matija Čop, the first Slovenian literary historian, linguist and librarian, as well as a friend and mentor of the poet France Prešeren, was born in the Čop birthplace house in Žirovnica on 26 January 1797. In 1919 the Prešeren scholar Tomo Zupan placed a commemorative plaque on the house. The house was bought in 1988 and renovated by 1994 with contributions from Slovenian schoolchildren, local residents, the Občina Jesenice (Municipality of Jesenice), the Ministry of Culture and others; since December 1994 it has been open to the public.

The house is reconstructed in its 19th-century appearance. Today it contains the memorial room of Matija Čop, a museum room about the archaeological site of Ajdna, an event space and the information point of the Žirovnica municipality. Visitors see an exhibition on Čop’s life and work with manuscripts, an exhibition on Ajdna, recitations of Zdravljica (Prešeren’s toast) in the eight languages that Čop spoke, and the dramatised documentary film Ni ga lepšga kraja (There Is No Finer Place) about the Žirovnica Cultural Heritage Trail, which can be seen only here.
