Prešernova rojstna hiša

Birthplace of the poet France Prešeren in Vrba, with a renewed exhibition on his life and work, a 19th-century farmhouse and the museum complex.

Opening hoursAdmission €7

About the museum

The Prešeren Birthplace is one of the oldest houses in Vrba. The original building dates from the 16th century, and it received its present appearance after a fire in 1856, which destroyed the farm building, the straw roof and the wooden roof truss. The farmhouse was then raised and gained a štibeljc (small attic bedroom). Some older building elements from the 16th century and the late Baroque period have been partly preserved.

The house was declared a monument of national importance in 2011. It is regarded as the first house of a well-known personality in Slovenia to have been converted into a museum, and as the most visited museum of this type in the country. It was reopened in 2026 after renovation; beside it a renewed museum complex with a new farm building has been created.

Visitors see the renewed exhibition on Prešeren’s life, work and most important literary masterpieces, and a farmhouse from the first half of the 19th century with a clay bread oven, a chamber with Prešeren’s cradle and a black kitchen. The complex also includes a modern hall for cultural events and the museum shop. The house is a sight on the Pot kulturne dediščine Žirovnica (Žirovnica Cultural Heritage Trail); it is managed by the Zavod za turizem in kulturo Žirovnica (Žirovnica Institute for Tourism and Culture).
