About the museum
The birthplace of the writer Janez Jalen is one of the oldest buildings in the village of Rodine, around 400 years old. From the beginning it has been closely linked to the neighbouring Church of St Clement, as it served as the sexton’s house, hence the house name Pri Mežnarju (At the Sexton’s). It was built at the beginning of the 17th century on the site of an earlier wooden building that had burned down. Besides the living quarters there was an outbuilding, and the occupants leased some land.
The house was declared a cultural monument in 1987 and has been open to the public since 1997. It is divided into two parts: the old part has remained as it was in Jalen’s time; the new part, built on the foundations of a former barn, has been home to the writer’s great-nephew and the guardian of his estate since 1991.
In the museum section, the entrance hall, black kitchen, house room and pantry are furnished with personal objects from the estate. The display cases hold extensive material on Jalen’s life and work, as the writer carefully kept manuscripts, correspondence and other documents.
