About the museum
Bled Castle stands on a steep rock above Lake Bled and is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia documented in writing. In 1004 the German king Henry II gave the Bled estate to the prince-bishops of Brixen; in a charter of 1011 the castle is mentioned for the first time as castellum Veldes. The bishops administered it through ministeriales; from 1371 it was leased out. It was damaged several times by earthquakes and lightning and had to be repaired.
After centuries of Brixen rule, the Bled estate was nationalised in 1803; during the Illyrian Provinces it passed to the French state. In the 19th century numerous owners followed, among them the industrialist Viktor Ruard and the wholesale merchant Adolf Muhr. After the Second World War the building began to decay. In 1952 a thorough restoration began under the direction of the Narodni muzej and the architect Tone Bitenc; it was completed in 1961.
Since 1999 the castle has been a cultural monument of national importance; since 2007 it has been managed by the Zavod za kulturo Bled. In the Baroque part of the building is the permanent exhibition of the Narodni muzej Slovenije on the history of Bled, which was renovated and supplemented with new archaeological findings in early 2025. Visitors can also see the castle printing house with a replica of Gutenberg's press, the wine cellar, and the Gothic chapel with Baroque frescoes.
