About the museum
The Finžgar birthplace, formerly called Dolenčeva kajža (Dolenc’s Cottage), in the village of Doslovče below Stol shows the way of life of a cottager family in Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) at the end of the 19th century. The upper rooms, with a black kitchen in the entrance hall, the pantry, the house and the kamra (storeroom), are arranged just as the writer describes them. The house was also a workshop: the writer’s grandfather wove linen, and his father was the first tailor far and wide to use a sewing machine.
The collection on the writer, dramatist, translator and priest Fran Saleški Finžgar was opened for the hundredth anniversary of his birth in 1971. It comprises an exhibition with paintings, photographs, documents and books about his family, life and work; the cellar rooms were renovated and supplemented in 2013. The farmstead with the house, the hayrack (kozolec) and the barn is today an open-air museum and a sight of the Žirovnica Cultural Heritage Trail.
