About the museum
Dežela kozolcev is an innovative project of the Municipality of Šentrupert, which links the heritage of the hayracks with modern forms of tourism and the economy. The municipality, local associations and companies, educational and scientific institutions and many individuals are involved in the project; the ambition is that over time it will grow into an ecomuseum model.
Dežela kozolcev is the first open-air museum of hayracks. It contains 19 relocated drying structures restored according to conservation principles, mainly from the Mirna valley and one from the area around Ivančna Gorica. The aim of the display is to show the development of the hayrack in time, space and social meaning, from simple drying racks to double hayracks (toplarji). Six development types are represented, three single and three double.
The museum covers 2.5 hectares of landscaped grounds with one kilometre of walking trails. The oldest is Lukat's toplar, dated 1795, among the oldest preserved double hayracks in our country and in the world. The Dežela kozolcev institute is a public institute, registered in 2015; its founder is the Municipality of Šentrupert.
