About the museum

The Muzej Hrastnik is a unit of the Zasavski muzej Trbovlje, housed in a former German primary school. The exhibitions are arranged on three floors: on the ground floor there are archaeological remains discovered during excavations at Podkraj, and along the corridors a photographic display of the development of Hrastnik.

On the first floor, in a former school classroom, an exhibition on the development of primary schooling in the Zasavje region has been set up. It shows original school equipment, teaching aids and other objects from the late 19th century to the 1970s, among them the school bell of the former school in Čeče and an old harmonium. On the same floor the Second World War is also presented.

In the attic there is a permanent exhibition, Lutke in lutkarji (Puppets and Puppeteers). It comprises more than 120 objects from a former amateur puppet theatre, founded in 1947 by apprentices of the trade continuing school who worked at the mine. Marionettes, javanke (rod puppets), props, costumes and documentary material are displayed in thirteen showcases, and the exhibition is complemented by a 34-minute documentary film about puppeteers.
