About the museum

Jurjeva domačija lies in the settlement of Občine on the edge of the Suha krajina (Dry Krajina). It has been declared a cultural and ethnological monument of local importance, as it displays many ethnological, regional and historical features and bears witness to the life of rural people before, during and immediately after the Second World War.

The farmstead is compact and consists of a single-storey house, an outbuilding, a wooden granary, a barn, a well, a grape arbour and an orchard; the cowshed and hayrack that once belonged to the farm have not survived. The residential building is partly stone and partly wood, with a straw roof. It contains an entrance hall with a black kitchen, a pantry, the house room, a štibelc (small room) and the oldest part, a cellar from 1508.

The wooden barn, built after 1730 and remodelled after 1848, has a straw roof, and beside it there is an orchard with old varieties of apple and pear trees. Visitors can see the interior by prior arrangement with the farmstead’s caretaker.
