About the museum

Sevnica Castle stands on a scenic hill above the old town centre. An older castle probably already stood on this site in the first half of the 12th century; it is first mentioned in writing in 1309 as “castellum Liechtenwalde”. It escaped destruction during the Croatian-Slovenian peasant uprising of 1573. The Lutrovska klet (Lutheran cellar) on the slope probably dates from about that time; Jurij Dalmatin, who was the first to translate the entire Bible into Slovenian, is said to have visited it occasionally. Later the cellar became the burial vault of the lords of Sevnica. At the end of the 16th century the castle was bought by Baron Moscon, who thoroughly remodelled it.

Today the castle is owned by the Municipality of Sevnica and managed by the public institute KŠTM Sevnica. It is the main cultural, historical and protocol venue in the municipality and the centre of cultural life.

Visitors can see the castle only with a guide. The tour includes presentation films, the Baroque salon, corridors and the tower with frescoes, the wedding hall, the castle chapel and several collections: among them the school and fire brigade collections, a collection on the people expelled from the municipality of Sevnica, and a collection on the Ajdovski gradec archaeological park. Next to the castle are a reconstructed Renaissance-Baroque park, the castle vineyard with the Klet modre frankinje (Blaufränkisch cellar) and the Grajska vinoteka.
