About the museum
In the Dom Cankarjevega bataljona (Cankar Battalion House) in Dražgoše there is a permanent collection on life in Dražgoše before, during and after the Second World War. The collection is run by the Loški muzej Škofja Loka (Škofja Loka Museum).
Dražgoše is first mentioned in written sources in 1291, in the urbarium of the Freising lordship. Before the war the village had a well-known pilgrimage church of St Lucy with golden altars from the second half of the 17th century, which are today kept in the Loški muzej. At the end of 1941 the Cankar Battalion settled in the village. On 9 January 1942 the occupier attacked the partisans, and the fight, known as the Battle of Dražgoše, continued until 11 January. The partisans withdrew to Jelovica, while the Germans killed and expelled many locals and set fire to houses, farm buildings and the church.
The collection presents the fighters of the Cankar Battalion and the fate of the village during the Second World War.
