About the museum
In Zgornja Kropa, right next to the central square of Kropa, stands one of the best-preserved ironworkers' houses, with a 17th-century building layout and a restored exterior. The ground floor was once home to an ironworker's family, while on the upper floor and in two attics blacksmiths' families were squeezed in. The original division of rooms is preserved, with five living spaces called hiše, several chambers and štibelci.
The name of the house, Fovšaritnica, comes from the word fovšija, meaning envy. In the rented flats, a shared hall with several hearths took the place of kitchens, so the housewives could easily see into one another's pots. According to oral tradition, as many as 72 people once lived in the house at the same time.
Today the owner lives on the ground floor, while the upper floors house an amateur ethnological collection presenting the lives of Kropa's families during and after the era of ironworking. Additional programmes are available for groups, such as a sketch in dialect, a tasting of traditional Kropa food and workshops.
