About the museum
Above the picturesque blacksmiths' village of Kamna Gorica, right next to the cerkev sv. Trojice (Church of the Holy Trinity), stands a sexton's house, the Muzejska hiša Mežnarija, about two hundred years old. From it there is a view over the village centre and towards the Karavanke mountains. The house, with its preserved black kitchen and a toilet of the štrbunk type, recalls an Upper Carniolan (Gorenjska) house from the early 19th century. The original layout is preserved, with a central room called hiša on the ground floor and upper floor; the upper floor was originally the chaplain's flat, where fragments of wall paintings have survived.
The rooms on the ground floor have been arranged for visitors: a wide entrance hall, the black kitchen, the hiša, the štibelc and a cellar. In the old wide corridor, notable people from Kamna Gorica are presented: the politician Dr Lovro Toman and Dr Lovro Pogačnik, the painters Matevž Langus and Ivan Varl, and the Kappus pl. Pichlstain family.
The exhibition in the remaining rooms tells of life in Kamna Gorica in the past and today, and of the work of chaplains, sextons and organists in this house. The museum is run by the Kulturno turistično društvo Kamna Gorica (Cultural and Tourist Society Kamna Gorica).
