Vigenjc Vice

About the museum

Vigenjci were forges in which nails were forged in Kropa, Kamna Gorica and Kolnica. The smiths made more than 120 types of nails. In 1479 Kropa had eight vigenjci, and in the mid-19th century already nineteen; along the stream Kroparica, around 50 water wheels turned over just over 1,200 metres.

Vigenjc Vice is partly stone and partly wood. Equipment from the 19th century has been preserved: three forge hearths, anvils, tools and bellows; in the channel beside the building a water wheel still turns. The interior is dark, and during a visit the blows of the hammer on the anvil can be heard. Since the founding of the Kovaški muzej the vigenjc has been a museum object.

The forge stands about five minutes' walk from the central square of Kropa in the direction of Jamnik. A visit with a demonstration of hand nail-making is possible by prior arrangement or as part of a guided tour of Kropa.
