About the museum
The beginnings of Solkan joinery go back to around 1850. The development of this craft was made possible by the proximity of Friulian joiners, the wealth of timber in the Trnovo Forest (Trnovski gozd) and the energy of the River Soča. Initially family workshops supplied furniture to the emerging middle class in nearby Gorizia and Trieste.
The museum presents furniture elements made by Solkan joiners, which bear witness to the material culture of a once highly developed joinery craft. Of particular interest is the upholstered office furniture that was made in the 1950s at the request of the government of the time for Josip Broz – Tito. A special area is devoted to interactive and multimedia content, through which younger visitors get to know the joinery craft in a different way.
The exhibition is the fruit of cooperation between the Solkan Carving, Inlay and Restoration Society (Rezbarsko, intarzijsko in restavratorsko društvo Solkan, RIRDS) and the Goriški muzej (Gorizia Museum).
