About the museum
The Goriški muzej was founded on 5 September 1952 by a decision of the Gorizia District People's Committee. After the Gorizia region was divided by a new state border following the Second World War, it replaced the lost centre in the emerging Nova Gorica; at first it was based in the Solkan primary school, and in 1954 it moved to Kromberk Castle.
The original building was erected in the first half of the 13th century by Count Henry of Dornberg; after 1615 the Coronini family began constructing a new building, called Neu Cronberg. Although the building with its towers gives the impression of a castle, it was designed as a palace or villa. It burned down during the First World War, in 1916, and after the Second World War the museum gradually restored it.
On the ground floor and the first floor there are permanent displays of art and cultural history, including the exhibition GO S50-60 on the town and its inhabitants in the fifties and sixties of the 20th century. The second floor is used for temporary exhibitions, lectures and other activities, and the castle is surrounded by a park with an amphitheatre and an open-air lapidarium.
