About the museum
The printmaker and painter Riko Debenjak (1908–1987) was from Kanal. He was one of the leading representatives of Slovenian experimental printmaking, the so-called Ljubljana school of graphic art, and one of the best Yugoslav artists in colour printmaking.
The gallery in the tower of the medieval town walls on Kontrada square in Kanal opened in 1977. Debenjak donated a collection of prints to his home town; it is shown in the gallery during the summer months, while the rest of the year the gallery hosts exhibitions by various artists. A smaller part of the rooms is devoted to presenting and preserving Debenjak’s legacy. In front of the gallery stands a bust of the artist.
