About the museum
On the hill of Mengore (453 m) above Tolmin runs a circular path through the remains of the first Austro-Hungarian defence line, which had a decisive influence on the outcome of the 12th Battle of the Isonzo. After 29 months of continuous shelling during the First World War, the positions on Mengore played a decisive role when Austro-Hungarian soldiers pushed the Italians back as far as the Piave River.
The path runs past trenches, caverns, memorials and the remains of stone walls of barracks. At the top stands the little Cerkvica Device Marije (Church of Our Lady) with a view of the Soča River and the Julian Alps. The museum is part of the Peace Trail from the Alps to the Adriatic.
