About the museum
The prehistoric settlement of the Soča region is among the most distinguished of its kind in the world; finds from it are displayed in museums in Vienna, Trieste, Gorizia and Tolmin. The museum in Most na Soči was set up according to the ideas of Drago Svoljšek, a long-time researcher of the archaeological history of the Tolmin area.
After ten years of work at Most na Soči, the excavations revealed a large Early Iron Age, Hallstatt-period settlement, which added to our knowledge of the svetolucijska kultura (Sveta Lucija culture). The houses whose remains are now preserved in the museum lined a street that archaeologists named Obrtna ulica (Craft Street); potters, metal founders and blacksmiths worked there.
The museum is located in the primary school in Most na Soči, between the construction site of the gymnasium and the school extension, where the remains of the prehistoric craft zone have survived.
