About the museum
The Briška hiša (Brda House) in Šmartno presents the living culture of the Goriška Brda. The exhibition Bivanjska kultura Briške hiše (Living Culture of the Brda House), set up by the Goriški muzej (Gorizia Museum), is arranged on the ground floor and the upper floor: at the entrance is the mezad (mezzanine), then a room by the hearth for meals and household chores; on the upper floor is the bedroom, and under the roof the granary (kašča) for produce. The furnishings were contributed by local women and donors.
In the cellar of the house the exhibition Briška klet (Brda Cellar): from the late 19th to the early 20th century has been on show since its opening at the end of May 2020. The cellar, which the people of Brda call the wine temple, was once used not only for wine but also for drying cured meats and storing tools. The exhibits show the cultivation of the vineyard, the processing of grapes and the care of wine; the Goriški muzej provided expert assistance.
The house is part of the medieval village of Šmartno; a combined ticket with Grad Dobrovo (Dobrovo Castle) and Vila Vipolže (Vipolže Villa) is also offered for visits.
