About the museum
Pišece Castle has been one of the estates of the Archdiocese of Salzburg since the second half of the 13th century; its first known inhabitants were the Pišece knights. Originally it was a Romanesque residential tower, which still defines the castle’s appearance today. In 1573 Ilija Gregorič stayed at the castle with a peasant army during the Slovenian-Croatian peasant uprising.
In 1595 Inocenc Moscon bought the estate, and the Moscon barons ruled the castle until 1938. During this period the castle was remodelled into a multi-storey residence. After the Second World War it was nationalised and occupied by tenants, who lived there until 1998. In 1999 it was declared a cultural monument of national importance, and in 2005 comprehensive restoration began.
After almost two decades of restoration, led by the Ministry of Culture, the castle was solemnly opened on 12 September 2026. It is managed by Posavski muzej Brežice (Posavje Museum Brežice) with the support of the Municipality of Brežice. The grounds are an English-style park with a pond and the tallest sequoia in Slovenia.
