About the museum
The Javerškova domačija (Javeršek farmstead), known locally as Lapova, stands as a solitary farm just over half a kilometre from the road between Podsreda and Bistrica ob Sotli, which is why it received the field name “v Loki” (in Loka). Marija Javeršek, the mother of Josip Broz Tito, was born here in 1864. When the large Broz family was in dire straits in Kumrovec, Marija sought help from her parents, which is why Josip Broz spent much of his childhood with his grandparents in Podsreda.
In 1979 the original part of the house was converted into a museum, with an entrance hall with a black kitchen, the house room and the pantry, or štiblc (small room). The rooms are furnished with original furniture from Tito’s youth and show the living culture of a farmhouse from the mid-19th century. The museum was opened by Josip Broz Tito during his last official visit to Slovenia. The farm is still run by the Javeršek family.
The farmstead, as one of the cultural attractions of the Kozjansko Regional Park, is managed by the public institute Javni zavod Kozjanski park.
