Grad Podsreda

About the museum

Podsreda Castle lies in the heart of Kozjansko Park, above the square of the same name, at an altitude of 475 metres. Hörberg or Herberch, as it was once called, is among the most important Romanesque architectural monuments in Slovenia, as its medieval core has remained almost untouched over the centuries. Its origins go back to the 12th century; the owner of the territory was Saint Emma. Over the centuries the bishops of Krka, the Counts of Celje, the Tattenbach family, the Lazarini and finally the Windischgrätz succeeded one another as owners.

Today the castle is owned by the Občina Kozje, and since 1983 it has been managed by Kozjanski park. The castle has moved from a state of decay to become an important carrier of the park's cultural, educational, social and tourist offer.

Visitors can tour the castle with audio guides or on guided tours. On display are exhibitions on the natural and cultural riches of Kozjansko (high-trunked meadow orchards, the Praznik kozjanskega jabolka (Kozjansko Apple Festival), the Gruska jama (Gruska Cave), the dolina srednjeveških trgov (Valley of Medieval Markets)), an exhibition of historical glass and a permanent painting exhibition by France Slana. The family adventure Lov na zaklad (Treasure Hunt) is designed for families; the Grajska kavarna (Castle Café), a shop with local products and the Središče za obiskovalce Kozjanskega parka (Visitor Centre of Kozjansko Park) are also on site, and it is possible to stay overnight at the castle.

• KO IGRA TRENUTKA POSTANE BREZČASNOST – France Slana – A permanent exhibition of oil paintings by the painter, printmaker and illustrator France Slana in the oldest part of the castle.
