About the museum
Rajhenburg Castle stands on a sixty-metre-high rocky spur above the confluence of the Brestanica stream and the Sava. It was built between 1131 and 1147 on the orders of the Archbishop of Salzburg Konrad, as witnessed by the oldest, Romanesque part of the building. For centuries it was administered by the ministeriales of Rajhenburg, who attained knightly rank in the 15th century.
In 1881 the castle was bought by Trappist monks, who converted it into a monastery that operated until April 1941. At that time the German occupation authorities set up a camp in it for the expulsion of Slovenes. After the war the monastery was dissolved, the castle was nationalised, and penal institutions operated in it. Since 1968 it has been used mainly for museum and event activities. Since 2004 it has been owned by the Občina Krško; it is managed by the Kulturni dom Krško, and a comprehensive renovation took place in 2010–2012.
The castle is a cultural monument of national importance and one of the most important monuments of medieval castle architecture in Slovenia. It has a Romanesque and a Gothic chapel; visitors can see the permanent exhibitions, castle furniture from the collections of the Narodni muzej Slovenije, and the medals of Primož Kozmus.
