About the museum
The Mestni muzej Krško (Krško Town Museum) was founded at the end of 2009 as a unit of the Krško Cultural Centre, but its roots go back to the 19th century: on 7 October 1894 the people of Krško placed a commemorative plaque on the house where Janez Vajkard Valvasor died on 19 September 1693. In 1939 the Museum Society for the political districts of Krško and Brežice was founded in Krško; it had premises in the deconsecrated Church of St Spirit (sv. Duh) and in the Valvasor House.
The area was declared a cultural and historical monument in 1993, and then three houses – the Valvasor House, the Jarnovič House and the Kaplan House – were renovated into a whole called the Valvasor complex. The renovation took place in 2008–2010, and the museum first opened its doors on 30 March 2010.
In its permanent exhibitions the museum presents the life of Janez Vajkard Valvasor and his family in Krško, Josipina Hočevar as an entrepreneur and benefactor, and the first Krško partisans. Alongside it operate the Krško Gallery in the former Church of St Spirit and the renovated Hočevar Mausoleum, which is run by the museum.
