About the museum
The Pollak cottage, also known as the Upper Kajža, was built after the great Tržič fire of 1811. Its first owner was the tanner Karel Pollak, and his son Gašper Pollak (1800–1880) established an indigo block-printing manufactory in the cottage; he was the first mayor of Tržič to be elected.
The Museum Society was founded in Tržič in 1952, and the Tržiški muzej in 1955 as a publicly funded institution. The Pollak cottage and the Fužina Germovka were acquired for museum activity as early as the 1950s. Today the cottage is the museum's main exhibition and administrative space; the museum runs several other units in Tržič and the surrounding area.
The permanent exhibition Bogastvo obrti (The Wealth of Crafts) presents the crafts and industries that shaped the town: shoemaking, tanning, hosiery-making, indigo printing and other textile activities. Since 2014 the ground floor has housed a permanent exhibition of the Slovenski smučarski muzej (Slovenian Ski Museum), which shows the development of skiing from prehistory to the present day.
